I posted on the KIX 105.7 Facebook page asking the question "What additional courses should be taught to H.S. students to prepare them for the real world?" We received some great answers.

For me growing up and going to Butler High School, I was lucky enough to have a teacher by the name of Giffin Simmons. I particularly remember two classes that I took from him. Psychology and Family Relations. The second class mentioned, Family Relations, was probably one of the best ones I could have had as it helped prepare me for what I was to experience after I graduated from high school.

After going on Facebook and asking what courses need to be taught to high school students to prepare them for after high school, we received some of these responses-

Tim K. - Taxes, investment opportunities, life skills such as bill pay, money management, basic vehicle knowledge, “how to buy a house”, how to deal with authority in the work place, basic home repairs and maintenance.

Storm S. - Mental health and how to handle their own depression; as well as, recognizing depression amongst friends.

I thought this was a very interesting and thought-provoking answer to the question-

Cady W. - I think we should stop lying to them for 4 years about how important college is, "If you go to college, you can get a better paying job" was the worst lie I was fed throughout high school. They had me & most of my peers believing that if we just worked hard & put ourselves in debt, we would be worth more money in the workforce. I went to college for 6 yrs, have 2 degrees. My husband dropped out & makes more $$ than i ever have at any job.

This one hit home for me as I have had both of my parents and one of my in-laws pass away-

Ali L. D.. - Estate planning...I’m shocked at how many adults have no idea what probate is and how to avoid it....not to mention, it effects anyone, at any age, with assets solely in their name.

What do you think?
