“Calendar Girls,” a drama based on a 2003 Miramax motion picture by Juliette Towhidi and Tim Firth, will be presented at the Liberty Center in downtown Sedalia Feb. 10 -13.

Based on a true story of 11 Women's Institute members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund, “Calendar Girls” has since become the fastest-selling play in British Theatre.

As the story goes, Annie's husband dies of leukemia in 1998. As a result, Annie and her best friend Chris Harper resolve to raise money for a new couch in the local hospital's waiting room in John's memory.

They somehow manage to persuade their fellow Women's Institute members to pose nude for an “alternative calendar” in 1999 that will be sold to raise money for the Leukemia Research Fund.

News of the calendar project spreads like wildfire, and the national press descends on the small village of Knapeley, located in the Yorkshire Dales.

And of course, with fame comes friction.

Will their long-standing friendships survive the “exposure?"

Jan Bahner is the director of this production, and opening night is Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The play will also be performed Friday and Saturday night, in addition to a Sunday matinee at 2 p.m.

Cast members include Roxanne Griggs, Kathleen Boswell, Greg Boswell, Kennedy Keele, Sara Schell, Melissa Turner, Megan Driani, Brad Henderson, Madison Henderson, Elisha Miller, Olivia Smith and Marco Caesar. Carl Hutcherson is the technical director.
