A 17-year-old from Centerview was flown to Research Medical Center after slamming into the rear of an 18-wheeler Thursday afternoon in Johnson County.

According to the MSHP, Dustin J. Silvers, 17, Centerview, was eastbound on Highway 50 just west of Route AA at 3:48 p.m. in a 2003 Dodge truck when he traveled off the roadway and struck a 2016 Peterbilt parked on the shoulder. The Dodge then returned to the roadway and came to rest in the left lane.

Silvers suffered serious injuries and was flown by Life Flight to Research Medical Center in Kansas City. His Dodge was totaled.

The Peterbilt had extensive damage and was towed from the scene. The driver was not identified.

A total of seven Troopers were on the scene, as well as Kingsville PD and Johnson County deputies.

Eastbound traffic was backed up for a long time on Highway 50. The lanes were actually closed for a time starting around 4 p.m., according to Johnson County EMA. By 4:45, a secondary collision occurred east of the original one, EMA reported. Westbound traffic was delayed as well.
