Child Safe to hold Wine Stroll Fundraiser June 30

Child Safe of Central Missouri, Inc., has announced plans to host a Wine Stroll in downtown Sedalia.

Event Chairman Matt Maggard, along with Child Safe Board Members Sue Squires and Jackie Cooley, approached the Sedalia City Council Monday night with their plans to hold a Wine Stroll with a “Cheers” style bar from 5 to 10 p.m. June 30.

The group asked the Council to suspend the open container law for a specific area of downtown during those hours.

“It's going to be a beer and wine-tasting event (around the courthouse). We're going to have nine breweries, four wineries and six food trucks,” Maggard said.

The Black River Band will also be performing on the Pettis County Courthouse steps.

“We'll have a lot of volunteers,” Maggard noted, adding that there will be four off-duty officers helping with security to keep the event a safe one.

In addition, there will also be a safe-ride-home booth and a first aid booth.

All participants will need to purchase a wrist band, Maggard noted, and ID will be checked.

Advance tickets are $30, and $35 on the day of the event. Organizers are expecting anywhere from 600 to 1,000 people to attend.

The event is a fund-raiser for Child Safe, whose mission is “to respond to and prevent child abuse, help families heal, and restore childhood hope.”

One of their many goals at Child Safe is to “minimize trauma suffered by the child due to multiple contacts with different community professionals.”

The Council later approved an ordinance waiving the requirements of Section 4-3(A) of the Code of Ordinances during the five-hour event.
