The identity of the suspect shot and killed in Pettis County on Tuesday night has been released.

On November 5, Pettis County deputies were called to the 16000 block of Oak Point Road in rural La Monte in reference to a verbal disturbance.

After making contact with the caller, four deputies and a Highway Patrol trooper arrived at the residence at approximately 6:30 p.m. They were reportedly met by an intoxicated male, later identified as 58-year old Jay P. Messer, of La Monte, who had a shotgun.

Law enforcement ordered Messer to put down the weapon, but he fired at them

Authorities returned fire and shot Messer.

A press release from the Pettis County Sheriff's Office says life-saving measures were taken until members of the Pettis County Ambulance District arrived. However, Messer died at the scene from injuries.

No officers were injured.

An investigation was completed overnight. Authorities says an autopsy will be conducted by the Boone County Medical Examiner's Office later this week.
