Sedalia Council members heard a presentation from a Chochran Engineering employee who updated the progress on the “Downtown Plaza” located in the 200 block of South Ohio.

Andrea Lohmeyer, an interior architect from Florissant, Mo., said that several local groups were consulted about ideas for the plaza. Some of the groups included SDDI, Sedalia Parks & Rec, Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival, Sedalia Area Farmers Market, the Sedalia Convention and Visitors Bureau, Sedalia City Council, Pettis County, the Heritage Foundation and local businesses.

Some recommendations included a concessions area, storage space, bike racks, and a 150-seat covered performance area, with the capability to expand seating to another 150 uncovered, as well as more parking, Lohmeyer said.

Community Development Director John Simmons noted that he feels that the downtown plaza “doesn't need to be over-designed or complicated” to be effective.
