Sedalia Fire Department Firefighters responded to an apartment fire on the 2nd floor of the apartment building on Buckner Court in the NE portion of Sedalia on Thursday morning.

A press release from SFD says 911 Communications dispatched the fire department at approximately 10:22 a.m. and the first units were on scene at 10:24.

SFD responded with 2 Engines, 1 Truck and 2 staff Chief Officers. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was reportedly showing from the apartment.

Firefighters searched the apartment, using a handline to extinguish the fire. Fire personnel were assisted by Sedalia Police in searching, and assisting occupants of adjoining apartments out of the building. Extensive damage was reported, as well as moderate smoke and water damage to an adjoining apartment.

Two lower units were damaged, as well. Smoke was also present in 4 of the 8 apartments in the building.

Firefighters were on scene until approximately 11:55 a.m. PCAD also assisted with an ambulance and supervisor standing by.

No injuries were reported, however 4 apartments are uninhabitable for the time being.  The fire was investigated by Fire Cause Investigators with the Sedalia Fire Department and it was determined that a burner on the stove was left on, resulting in a melted aluminum pot or pan which in turn started the blaze.

SFD says the burner on the stove was found melted in the on position.

More information will be available once the official report is completed.
