I recently asked this question on Facebook. "Where is the worst place to take a first date in Sedalia? And here's what you told me.

Victoria asked me why I asked the question. My answer is life isn't that serious and  I wanted to see how silly you'd get with the answers. And some of your answers were definitely filled with belly laughs. Others made me go, what? Why? How did that restaurant hurt you?

And of course, once again, there were the naysayers that just wanted to bag on Sedalia, who advised taking your date to another town. I get it, to an extent. Pine Street in Warrensburg just seems sexier than downtown Sedalia. Although don't count out the Oak Room and the Ivory Grill. And what about No. 5 Bistro and Bar in the Lamy Building? You could start your date with a cocktail while browsing the books and records at Josey before sitting down to dinner.

I digress, though, this article is about the places you said were the worst to take a first date in Sedalia.

Cady said Applebees. But Erin countered with Applebee's oreo shake. And Ruben suggested you shouldn't take a first date to Applebee's in any town. As much as I hate to admit this, I might have taken my wife to Applebee's for our first date. But we were young, and we thought places like Applebee's, Chili's, and TGI Friday's were cool back then. I'd agree, if you're looking to impress your date, maybe a more unique place would make more of an impression.

Ruben suggested cooking dinner for your first date. Although, I'm not sure going to your date's home when you don't know them very well is a good idea. That might be a better idea several dates in. Of course, it really depends on how well you know the person you're going out with.

Gene said don't go to the Phillips 66 on South 65, but he does like their chicken. Lisa wanted to know who would take their date to a gas station even if they had good chicken, and also mentioned not going to a rib place. Ribs are messy, so that might not be a good idea. And hitting the Phillips 66 on South 65 for a date, well maybe if you're 16 that might be fun.

Lisa said that Golden Corral and Asain Buffet are nasty, and Jessica seconded the Golden Corral part. Personally, I believe buffets are an intimate dining experience that shouldn't be experienced until the couple is quite comfortable enough with each other to really strap on the feed-bag and enthusiastically enjoy food, and a lot of it, in front of each other.

The really funny answers included: her next boyfriend's house. Her last boyfriend's house. Mount Trashmore. Skip's basement. The Pettis County Jail. And the Sedalia Animal Shelter. Frankly, I think any of those places would make your first date your last date.

Outside of that, whether you choose a candlelit swanky joint with steak and great wine. Or a sports bar with cold beer, the game on all the TVs, and great bar food is up to you. And I'm sure you'll make the right choice. Just skip the gas station with the good chicken, unless you are a junior at Smith-Cotton High School. And even then, might I suggest an upgrade to Sonic? It's classic, not expensive, and you might even be able to steal your first kiss there.
