My wife Kathy and I found ourselves in Lee's Summit for an appointment this morning. And since we were big fans of Whataburger from our time in Texas, we decided to see if the new store in Lee's Summit measures up.

We wound up arriving at the restaurant, 1460 NE Douglas, next to the campus of Saint Luke's East Hospital just afternoon. The drive-through line was spilling out onto the street, and the smallish parking lot was pretty congested. We decided to go through the drive-through and then park and eat.

The store's look for me took some getting used to. I'm a big fan of the classic iconic Whataburger architecture prevalent in West Texas. And this Whataburger is really understated. In fact, I identified it from the orange flags out front before I saw the sign.

For how long the drive-through line was, they did move people through quickly. I wondered with the lines, and the fact one of two drive-through lines were closed if maybe they've been having some staffing issues. That said, we didn't wait any longer in line than you would at McDonald's during the lunch rush in Sedalia.

Kathy wanted to get her favorite burger, the Sweet and Spicy Bacon Burger. Unfortunately, we found that the burger hasn't been added to the menu at the Lee's Summit store. So Kathy was a little disappointed and settled for the Patty Melt.

The Patty Melt is two burgers, two slices of Monterey Jack, grilled onions, and Whataburger's Creamy Pepper Sauce between two slices of Texas Toast. The melt came hot and melty and Kathy enjoyed it. The Whataburger Creamy Pepper Sauce has a kick too, according to Kathy.

I got the Double Whataburger with cheese and ketchup only. I'm not a big fixins guy when it comes to burgers, and I found that I like my Whataburgers without mustard. My burger came out hot and melty and tasted every bit as good as the Whataburgers I got back in Texas. I skipped the pictures of the melt and the burger, cause, well, they never look as good as they do on the website.

We paired our burgers with medium fries. While I enjoyed the fries, I usually like them with ketchup. I thought they were lukewarm. Kind of like maybe they were at the bottom of a batch. Kathy enjoyed her fries very much.

The bottom line, it was a really good lunch that we both enjoyed. We'd be happy to drive back to Whataburger in Lee's Summit occasionally for lunch, dinner, or part of a date night. This location is open 24 hours and as of this writing online ordering is not an option.
