The Parents As Teachers program will offer free developmental screenings for children age 3 months to 5 years on Jan. 16-17 at the Pettis County Early Childhood Cooperative, 2255 S. Ingram Ave, in Sedalia.

Screenings are by appointment only and eligible children must be residents of Pettis County and not yet in kindergarten. The areas screened include speech, vision, hearing, language, readiness and motor skills; there also is a health questionnaire.

According to an article from Georgetown University Health Policy Institute:

  • Early identification and treatment of developmental delays can help children access the services and supports they need to reach their full potential. All children should receive developmental screens at pediatrician-recommended intervals to ensure their healthy development.
  • Routine, universal developmental screenings as recommended by pediatric and child development experts work to identify children with or at risk of such delays. A screen is the first step in a process to uncover an issue that warrants a closer, more detailed evaluation.
