Missouri Governor Mike Parson on Jan. 19 released his Fiscal Year 2023 state budget recommendations as part of his State of the State address.

His proposed budget includes a number of recommendations that would benefit UCM directly or indirectly.

The recommendations include a 5.4% increase in core appropriations; $19.9 million to renovate the Humphreys Building (which would require a match of $19.9 million from UCM); and an increase in funding for Bright Flight and other state financial aid programs.

The budget recommendations now move to the House of Representatives for consideration and debate. UCM will track closely the discussions in the legislature and advocate for the Governor's recommendations throughout that process, said University President Roger Best. Although this was an important first step, it was only the first step in a lengthy process, he added.

"We appreciate Governor Parson's tremendous support for Higher Education.  His recommendations include increases of almost $600 million for Higher Education in the state, which is significant for the transformative work we do.  We look forward to our conversations with our Missouri Senators and Representatives as we discuss the importance of these funds to UCM and the state as a whole," Best said.
