Nicknames...we've heard them before. Maybe you have a nickname. One that was given to you by a friend or a family member. But did you know that a lot of towns/cities in Missouri have nicknames?

Many towns and/or cities in Missouri have nicknames associated with their region/location in the state. Some have them as they are associated in reference to travelers to their community. Others have nicknames depending on what has made them famous.

According to Wikipedia.com:

Cities in Missouri are known by (or have been known by historically), officially and unofficially, to municipal governments, local people, outsiders or their tourism boards or chambers of commerce.

The first name that pops into my head when you mention nicknames is the one for Sedalia, "The State Fair City". For St. Louis it's the "Gateway to the West". For Kansas City the first one that comes to mind is "The City of Fountains".

So, those are some the obvious ones but what about some of the smaller cities and/or towns in the Show-Me State? (See how I snuck in that nickname?) Do you know any of their nicknames?

Here's a partial list of some of the more entertaining names:

Brunswick-Home of the World's Largest Pecan

Chillicothe-Home of Sliced Bread

Independence-Where the Trail Ends and the Buck Stops

Peculiar-Where the Odds Are With You

That's just a short list of some of the nicknames. Although many of us refer to Sedalia as "The State Fair City", it also has the moniker of "The Queen City of the Prairie", and of course we refer to Warrensburg as "The Burg".

So what nickname is your favorite?
