May is National Bike Month and Healthy U, which is a community health and wellness initiative, is hosting Sedalia’s 6th annual “Bike to Work Week” May 14-18.

“Biking to work encourages people to include physical activity in their daily routines,” said Melissa Boeschen, community outreach coordinator at Bothwell Regional Health Center and the chairperson of the Healthy Living Action Group in Sedalia. “It’s our hope that some people who participate in Bike to Work Week will continue to ride their bikes throughout the year.”

According to a press release from Bothwell Regional Health Center, bicycle commuters are encouraged to take a photo with their bike outside the workplace and post on the Healthy U Facebook page.

"Bike to Work Week" will culminate on Friday, May 18, when members of the Healthy Living Action Group will visit participants who have posted to the Facebook page, to pass out prizes.

In conjunction with "Bike to Work Week", the Healthy Living Action Group will kick off its monthly “Moving 101” activities on Thursday, May 17, with “All About Bikes” from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Katy Trail shelter on Clarendon Road.

Ebby Norman, owner of Pro-Velo in downtown Sedalia, will provide tips on basic bicycle safety and proper bicycle maintenance. The press release indicates a group trail ride, walk, jog or run will follow the presentation.
