Over the years the Hillside Motel on Blue Parkway about three miles from the Truman Sports complex developed a little bit of a reputation. Truthfully, that might be a little bit of an understatement based on the amount of coverage the motel received when they demolished it in early 2019.

At the time of its demolition, Kansas City's Fifth District Councilwoman Alicia Canady told KMBC TV, "When you remove blight, you open up opportunities, and that is what we are looking for -- new opportunities, new economic development to come along this corridor in the 5th District, and for residents to be happy when they go home and not have to look at an unsightly structure."

Looking at Google Maps, the hope for new opportunities or economic development doesn't seem to have materialized.

Information on the Hillside Motel is hard to come by. There just isn't a lot out there on this motel. Chronicles of a Forsaken Explorer, who shot the YouTube video, says the motel was in operation from 1985 and closed in 2010.

That said, the actual buildings seem to predate those dates. One commenter on the video suggested the buildings date from the Pendergast era, and that when built, the motel was just out of the Kansas City limits where anything could go on.

Another commenter on the video who said he worked at the bar said it was a speakeasy in the prohibition era, and that the basement was spooky. He says there was a big manhole down there, and the rumor was people would be murdered there and thrown in the manhole which led to a creek behind the buildings.

One thing is for sure, by the time of its closure it was a rough joint known as a place where people could satisfy their vices, along with finding the trouble that came with those vices.

In 2007 the Pitch did an article on Hook-Up Hotels and the Hillside made the list. Their comment on the motel is one for the ages and worth reading in its entirety. For our purposes here's a quote from the article, be forewarned, it's very blunt.

"But coupling here would be like *****ing in a cave you found in the woods, all the time wondering if that gray mass on the wall is a spider’s egg sac. On the other hand, it’s probably one of the cheapest adrenaline rushes in town. Be warned, though, that there are some perversions even this motel won’t allow: Management rules limit room occupancy to only two people."

The motel was torn down in 2019, however, you can still check out our pictures, as well as watch the YouTube video shot by Chronicles of a Forsaken Explorer. Keep scrolling to check out the pictures of The Hillside Motel.

Check Out The Sad Story of One of Kansas City's Formerly Great Hotels

At one time this hotel which was located near I-435 and Front Street was one of the bigger hotels in Kansas City, and somewhat swanky. The hotel's downfall included anarchy, employees that just walked away from their post, an owner who escaped Kansas City for Brazil, and an eventual implosion of the buildings. Pictures come from Youtube videos created by Steven Downing and Exploring the Abandoned.

A Look At the Abandoned Once Great Millennium Hotel In St. Louis

The abandoned Millennium Hotel near The Gateway Arch and Busch Stadium was once one of St. Louis' great riverfront hotels. Since its abandonment several years ago, time, decay, and urban explorers have all taken their toll on the building. Unconfirmed reports of asbestos or other contamination in the building make it even more unattractive and expensive to rehab or tear down and redevelop. Millenium Hotels, who still apparently own the hotel, don't seem all that interested in redeveloping, remodeling, or selling the facility either.

Check out these photos, from a video shot several years ago before time began to ravage the complex. They're from a Youtube video shot by BackyardExploration seven years ago. You can check out more recent photos of the hotel's decline here.
