The Sacred Heart High School has announced the dates for their free Christmas Dinner.  It’s for the elderly, unemployed, and homeless of Pettis County on Friday, Dec. 24.

The issue of homelessness isn't something we think about a lot here in Sedalia and Pettis County.  We're a smaller town, and I know growing up that I thought that kind of thing happened to other people, people in the big cities.  But it's real, and it's here.  It might not be as dramatic as some of the depictions you see on TV and movies; a lot of homeless people are just folks who are living with relatives, going from house to house as they try to get back on their feet.  In fact, most of the homeless nationwide are children; their families are working, but there was a setback with rent or the mortgage, and now they're living with friends or family.

This dinner is also for people who are unemployed, the people who are barely getting by and can't afford to spend a lot of money on a big turkey dinner.  Sacred Heart is also thinking of the elderly and homebound.  It might not be practical or easy for them to get to a relative's house.  They might not have transportation, or their families live elsewhere.  Maybe they've got an illness or condition that requires they stay at home.  All of these groups that drift through the cracks of the holiday giving season can be helped by the Sacred Heart church dinner.

They’ll be delivering from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and you can pickup your orders in the school cafeteria on Christmas Eve.  Call in your delivery from now to Dec. 22 by calling 827-3800 between 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. There will be no one answering the phones on December 23 and 24, 'cause they're not in school. So no late orders will be honored.  The deadline is December 22. That's important, because they have to have enough food for everyone who needs it, and they have to arrange all the folks who go out and deliver it. So if you have a relative or friend that might need a meal delivered, get their reservation in now. There's no cost, you just have to make the call. Now do note, they're not doing a sit down dinner this year. Only pickups or deliveries. I hope you don't need it, but if you do, I hope you enjoy it.

Christmasly yours,
Behka
