You guys, I'm not too big on putting too much stock into the internet when it comes to home cures.  But I've had a different kind of cold lately, and I didn't want to spend the time or money to go to the doctor... so to the internet I went.It seems like my cold this time isn't just a stuffy nose and mucus.  It's also tummy troubles!   Sometimes my stomach will hurt for no reason, and according to Web MD,  I either have a common cold, Campylobacter*, or Typhoid.  Call me a cynic, but I'm gonna go with the first one.  So I was looking on the internet for things that might help supplement my DayQuil.  I started to see a lot about Fennel Seeds.

Turns out, they've been used a lot over the years -

  • Fennel has long been used as a remedy for flatulence and indigestion in traditional medicines.
  • Fennel seed decoction or added as spice in food has been found to increase breast milk secretion in nursing mothers.
  • Fennel water often is used in newborn babies to relieve colic pain and help aid digestion.
  • Fennel seed oil is used to relieve coughs, bronchitis and as massage oil to cure joint pains.

And hey, I have some in my spice rack, so why not?  I brought a infuser thing and some fennel seeds to work and put it all in a mug with some hot water.

Wouldn't you know it,.... it helped.  Or it seems like it is.  I might be just Wanting it to work, you know, like the placebo effect.  But either way, I'll take it.

What kind of home remedies have you tried over the years?  What works?  What doesn't?  Tell me all about it and maybe we'll help each other through cold and flu season.

Fennely yours,
Behka

*That's just another term for a stomach bug.  I might have to start using that one!
