The Johnson County Board of Equalization will begin meeting in mid-July.

Johnson County Assessor, Mark Reynolds, says the board will meet Monday, July 17, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in the Johnson County Commission Office.

The goal of the meetings is to hear from those who disagree with the values of real estate and personal property established by the assessor for tax year 2017. According to a press release from the Johnson County Clerk, Diane Thompson, the board tentatively plans to conclude the hearings on Thursday, July 20, by 4:00 p.m.

According to Reynolds, the new assessments were established, notices were sent to owners whose real property increased in value, and as the law requires, the assessment books were returned to the county clerk. The next step in the property tax process is a review of assessments by the county board of equalization followed by the setting of levies by the political subdivisions.

Property owners who wish to appeal their assessments or to have an informal hearing prior to the Board of Equalization, should contact the County Assessor’s office at 660- 747-9822, for the necessary forms.

Appeal forms must be turned into the Assessor’s office by Wednesday, July 12. The press release says that property owners appearing before the board, should be prepared to present evidence to establish what they believe to be the correct value of their property. After a decision of the board, if the property owner is still dissatisfied with the assessment, the appeal may be lodged with the State Tax Commission, and after that, to the circuit court.
