Johnson County Fire Protection District Building New Station Near Knob

Construction recently began on a new Johnson County Fire Protection District
Station Four building near Knob Noster.

The building, located at 85 NE D Highway, is replacing the current structure located approximately 2,500 feet to the west which was built in 1990.

The current Station Four building is 1,600 square feet and consists of three open apparatus bays and a small restroom. Current space needs have exceeded the functionality of the current structure. The new building will be 4,000 square feet and consist of four open apparatus bays, an office, a training room, a restroom with a shower, and a mezzanine storage area.

The new location also provides easy access to D Highway, 50 Highway, and 23 Highway, which are three arteries vital to Station Four's primary response area.

“As time has gone on, the need for space in many of our stations has continued to increase,” said Fire Chief Larry Jennings. “Apparatus sizes have increased, the amount of necessary equipment stored in the stations has increased, and the need for space for training has increased. Providing additional space for decontamination of personnel and equipment is also a high priority for firefighter safety as cancer in the fire service is becoming more prevalent."

A&C Builders, LLC of Centerview was awarded the bid to construct the new station. The construction is funded by capital improvement funds reserved by the District.

“As always, we appreciate the confidence from our taxpayers to allow us to continue to improve our infrastructure which directly correlates to the high-quality service we strive to provide,” said Jennings.

Completion of the new building is expected in late 2022 or early 2023.
