We are happy to present the premiere of James Brown and George Clinton collaborator Maceo Parker's cover of Prince’s “The Other Side of the Pillow.”

"I am really pleased to be including a Prince song on this album," Parker tells Ultimate Prince. "I recorded this song back in 2002 with Prince but we never got to finish it. We recorded it again freshly in New Orleans for the new album and it pays tribute to two geniuses, Prince and Ray Charles. Also two very important people to me. I hope you enjoy it.”

It’s taken from the funk icon’s Soul Food: Cooking With Maceo, his first album in eight years, which will be released on June 26 through Mascot Label Group’s new imprint The Funk Garage. It’s available for pre-order now. Prince recorded the original around 1996 at Paisley Park and it appeared on his 21st LP, The Truth, in 1998.

You can listen to the new track and the original below:

Soul Food: Cooking With Maceo blends raw, old school funk with the flavors of the New Orleans school of music,” the label said in a statement. “Parker worked with Ivan Neville, Nikki Glaspie and Tony Hall, as well as a host of local musicians to record the songs. The funky flavor of the city weaves its way through the album as Maceo and the band take on iconic songs of the Mississippi masters such as Dr. John’s voodoo funk of ‘Right Place, Wrong Time’, the Meters ‘Just Kissed My Baby,’ ‘Yes, We Can Can’ recorded by Allen Toussaint … as well as takes on Aretha Franklin’s ‘Rock Steady’ [and] Prince’s ‘The Other Side of the Pillow’.”

Mascot noted: “In the 1994 documentary My First Name Is Maceo, George Clinton said, ‘You just transcend things and just be energy and beautiful, that’s where Maceo can play and sing, to me, that’s where I really enjoy Maceo the most.’”
