Sedalia Mayor John Kehde wants residents to take advantage of events that may boost their holiday spirit this year.

In a message posted on the City of Sedalia Facebook page, Mayor Kehde writes about some of the events happening in Sedalia over the next few weeks that he believes will allow area residents to safely take part in area holiday traditions and boost their spirits.

The first event Mayor Kehde mentions is the Thanksgiving night tree lighting and fireworks show at the Hotel Bothwell. He's encouraging residents to view the tree lighting and fireworks from the comfort of their cars, in person observing social distancing, or live-streamed on the Hotel Bothwell's Facebook page.

He also invites all residents to participate in a couple of traditions the City spearheads every year. The first is Sedalia's annual Outdoor Christmas Light Contest. "This 40 year old contest only requires the cost of your time; first in putting up your Christmas lights and secondly, in submitting your application to my office. You can provide a wonderful experience for area friends and families who enjoy bundling up and driving around to view the area Christmas lights."

The second is Sedalia Parks & Recreations Light Up Liberty Drive. Mayor Kehde writes, "This tradition had fallen to the wayside for many years, but thanks to the leadership of Parks Director Amy Epple, the Parks & Rec Board and Staff, Liberty Park has once again become a holiday show piece for both residents and visitors to enjoy. I’d also encourage you to make a trip downtown to see the many added lights on our downtown businesses."

Finally, the mayor is encouraging area residents to make shopping local part of their Christmas tradition. The mayor says that when local businesses are patronized you're helping another local family have a great holiday.
