On Friday (Apr 20), a deputy with the Miller County, MO Sheriff's Department died from injuries he sustained in a vehicle wreck.

The Miller County Sheriff's Office says that deputy Casey Lee Shoemate, of Eldon, MO, was dispatched to a residential structure fire on Hittridge Road, off Route Y between Eldon and Rocky Mount.

While driving to the scene in his patrol vehicle, Shoemate reportedly encountered a fire apparatus that was not sounding a siren or displaying emergency lights, traveling in the same direction.

While approaching the intersection of Route Y and Rabbit Head Road, Shoemate entered the oncoming lane of the highway to overtake the apparatus. During the maneuver, Shoemate encountered another vehicle, driven by 65-year old Robert M. Levin, of Florissant, MO. The vehicles collided and deputy Shoemate was killed upon impact.

Levin suffered serious injuries and was taken to University Hospital, by Staff for Life, for treatment.

Funeral arrangements for deputy Shoemate are being prepared by the Missouri Funeral Assistance Team and the MO Chapter of Concerns Of Police Survivors.
