On the morning of Thursday, May 23, the Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP) officials learned the tornado that hit Jefferson City, Missouri caused damage to the property. After an assessment, it has been determined that the property will need to undergo repairs.
The MSP is fully committed to their visitors’ experience. Essential to this commitment is the communication with patrons about safety issues when they arise; the well-being of our visitors and staff is their first priority.
In a press release from the Missouri State Penitentiary:
It is with a heavy heart, and with safety in mind, that the MSP tours will be suspended until further notice. While we never like to close the doors to our tourists, this process will better help us tell the story of MSP and its past and present history.
We are working closely with State and City officials to determine the best course of action to move forward after this devastating event. Our mission continues to focus on the preservation and restoration of the historic MSP.
