Mother’s Day is Sunday…Who Made the Special Day Possible?

Why is it we can never remember what day it is that Mother's Day falls? I just read something that I guess I either forget or was never aware of. Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May. Now, you have it. No excuses!

Mother's Day has been around awhile. In fact, next year it will be 150 years since Mother's Day was suggested by Julia Ward Howe. Howe was a writer and a suffragist. She felt it was an opportunity to not only celebrate our mothers but also to unite women and rally for peace.

Another daughter by the name of Anna Jarvis years later campaigned for the holiday to observe her mom and others for their works on child care and health issues.

According to a story on cnn.com, Mother's day became a holiday in 1914 when President Woodrow Wilson made it official with the second Sunday in May designated as a day of "public expression of our love and reverence for the mothers of our country."

With the years leading up to the culmination of the day being officially celebrated, Ann Jarvis was disappointed on how the celebration of our mom's became so commercial by floral and greeting card companies.

Although initially, it was going to church and writing letters to celebrate the day, now it's definitely a venture for young boys and girls alike to either make or buy that special card and/or gift to commemorate their moms on the special day.

In the story from cnn.com, it was estimated on Mother's Day in 2020 the amount spent was $26.7 Billion.
