Enjoy this week. This time between Christmas and New Year's is one of those weeks where many of us can slow down a little and catch our breath. Christmas is behind us. New Year's Eve is still in front of us. As is the promise of a better year. Or at least a fun celebration Friday night. Yet, one of my two least favorite stretches of the year is almost here.

And that would be the stretch o the year from January 2 through Memorial Day. My second least favorite time of the year is from Labor Day through the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Why? For many of us, those are the longest stretches of the year with no holidays.

Of course, if you're a first responder or you're working in the service industry and just spent Christmas working you're probably rolling your eyes at me thinking, "I just worked Christmas Eve and Christmas, Rob, just shut up and enjoy the holiday." And I get it.

It's not that these stretches are all that bad either. It just feels a little daunting to wake up on January 2 and realize the next time we'll be off for a holiday will be Memorial Day. And I get that same feeling every fall after Labor Day, although the stretch from Labor Day to Thanksgiving seems less daunting than the long winter ahead of us until we hit the three summer holidays.

That's not true for everyone. School kids and public employees tend to get off work or school for the Federal Holidays like President's Day in February and Columbus Day in October. Some old-school legacy companies give people those days off too. Yet, I haven't been off on Columbus Day or President's Day since I was in school.

School kids, I think we can all agree, have it the best. They always seem to have some early dismissal or teachers' workshop they can look forward to for a day off. And spring break too. Of course, these days kids' lives are packed with sports, organized activities, and clubs so I'm not sure they ever really get a day off.

The good news is these periods of the year are not as daunting as they seem when I wake up on January 2, or the Tuesday after Labor Day. As Ferris Bueller says, " Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

With each passing year, life seems to move faster and faster. And while life will seem to be moving at a miserably slow pace at some point in late January or February when a pattern of snow and bitter cold seems to settle over West Central Missouri, Memorial Day and the second half of the year will sneak up and surprise us before the Royals can fall out of contention in the American League Central.

So I'll bite my lip, suck it up, and try to get through the next few months. Maybe I'll even try and schedule a couple of days off I can look forward to. My own personal Rob holidays. That idea doesn't seem half bad.
