On Monday at 12:48 p.m., Pettis County Jail Staff found a jail inmate unconscious and unresponsive in his cell. The inmate was a 38-year-old white male.

Officers made entry into the cell, where they located the victim lying on a bunk. He was not breathing and had no heartbeat.

Officers immediately initiated lifesaving measures, and Pettis County Ambulance District, as well as the Sedalia Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene at 333 South Lamine.

Advanced life-saving measures were attempted, but the victim could not be resuscitated, according to the report.

Pettis County Coroner Robert “Skip” Smith responded to the scene and a death investigation was initiated.

There were no immediate signs of injury or trauma, and the death is believed to be related to a possible medical issue.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed to determine the exact cause of death. An investigation is open and active, the Pettis County Sheriff's Office said.

The inmate's name was not released.
