Smith-Cotton High School HOSA members conducted a "Heart Healthy" service project at Sedalia Middle School over the week of Nov. 29 to Dec. 2.

HOSA-Future Health Professionals is an organization for students interested in the medical field.

Each day, S-C HOSA members met with fifth graders during their physical education classes, where HOSA members had planned stations with games and activities to teach the SMS students about the anatomy of their hearts and healthy habits.

Students enjoyed playing “Heart Twister” to identify major chambers and blood vessels, learned about heart rate and blood pressure, and compared hearts from different animals, including getting to hold a fresh deer heart.

S-C HOSA Advisor Anna Singer said, “We would like to thank Bothwell Regional Health Center for partnering with our chapter and providing support to make our chapter activities possible."

Smith-Cotton's HOSA chapter has more than 60 members who participate in service projects, gain insight from health-related guest speakers from the Sedalia community, and have the opportunity to attend the HOSA State Leadership Conference. Smith-Cotton also offers four courses in the biomedical pathway taught by Singer and Angela Wisdom as part of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) program.
