Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt issued a news release on Monday stating that a number that was spoofed by scammers has been showing up in Missouri and across the country. The alleged number shows that it is from the  "US Government" or even "US District Court." The call is asking for money.

According to a story from newstribune.com, the callers try make the call sound like it's coming from a child pretending to be their grandchildren. The caller states they are in jail and need money for bail to get out.

The scam is referred to as the "Grandparents Scam" and is usually directed towards the elderly.

According to the Missouri Attorney General's Office, these calls are to be reported immediately to the Consumer Protection Hotline. That number is 1-800-392-8222. Or you can go online and report it at ago.mo.gov/app/consumercomplaint.

Either way the Missouri Attorney General's office reminds everyone that if you receive one of these types of calls, ask the type of questions that would be hard for the scammer to know-their mom's or dad's birthday or place of birth, the family pet's name, etc.

Schmitt said in the news release that his office will take action wherever and possible.
