The Sedalia City Council approved a contract amendment with KC Gunite Monday night for construction of an aquatics center for the Heckart Community Center at a cost of $4,461,800.

This comes after a final design was approved and the contractor bid exact specifications. The amount is higher than the original estimate of around $3.6 million.

The Sedalia Park Board selected KC Gunite as the contractor back in January, explained Parks & Rec Director Amy Epple.

“We were paying them $1,000 for them to come in and do the design of the pool. At the time, it was around $3.6 million with the hot tub,” Epple said Monday night. After adding improvements, (lighting, air quality, temperature control) the final cost came to $4.4 million.

Early estimates ranged from $4.7 to $5.2 million, “so we're still under budget,” Epple said. “And it's everything we need to operate a safe and efficient pool.”

Accompanying Epple Monday night was the community center's namesake, Sue Heckart.

The Sedalia Park Board met Thursday evening and had approved the KC Gunite contract, which was them forwarded to full Council for approval. The vote was seven yes, and zero no votes.
