I was kind of hesitant to talk about this, actually.  I don't want people to worry about me, and I don't want them to think I'm some crazy person.

On occasion, I sleepwalk.  It's mostly been kind of a funny thing, and I've talked about it before. My mom did it, my sister does it, it's just something that happens from time to time. It's not an every night kind of thing, it's more like an every three to four months thing.  I think the most its happened has been maybe a couple of weeks in a row, but then nothing happens for months. It's mostly been a funny little story to tell.  But now that I'm thinking about what happened this week... it might not be so funny all the time.

So every Monday night, Husbando goes to visit a small group of friends and they play tabletop games together.  Sometimes he doesn't come home until very late or even early in the morning.  This past Monday was one of those nights. So I went to bed, as normal, alone.

Normally, when I sleepwalk, Husbando catches me and just tells me to go back to bed. Well, he wasn't here this time.  I woke up at the corner of Grand and Broadway.  I was in my car. My headlights were on, I was buckled in, turn signal on, fully and correctly clothed, bag with me and I had my cell phone.

Everything was right, except... it was 1:15 a.m. I remember seeing the numbers on the clock on the dash of my car.  I wasn't supposed to get up for another few hours. So, I just went back home, got my pyjamas back on and went back to bed without thinking much about it.

But now... I am kind of worried about it.  What if I hadn't woken up?  What if I had made it to work? What would I have done then? Would I still do everything like normal, or would some weird sleepwalking behavior kick in?   Like, would I get there and just stay in the car or something? What if I did a SHOW asleep?!  You guys would think I was insane! Oh God, what if I got in an accident? Would I be able to wake up then? What if I couldn't? What if I hurt someone? Would the police believe that I was sleepdriving?

Now I'm kind of... at a loss.  Because this hasn't been a big problem before, it was just a funny story.  I've never gotten further than the dining room before, and I've certainly never left the house sleepwalking before.  While I'm grateful I made it a few blocks without incident and everything else was normal.... I can't help but think that something could have gone very very wrong.

It made me think of a comedian I like, Mike Birbiglia.  He's got a sleepwalking disorder and it seems a lot worse than what I have.  I don't sleepwalk and dream at the same time, but he does. I just get up and try to go to work or try to find  my phone that's not in the kitchen. So I guess it could be worse.  I haven't hurt myself in a major way sleepwalking (I fell on my butt in the kitchen once, but that's it).  Mike has a special method of going to sleep where he has to basically burrito himself in a kind of sleeping bag thing to go to sleep to make sure he doesn't get up unless he's really awake.

I'm wondering if I should look into that.  Or maybe just for Monday nights? Husbando will stop me if he's there.  What do you guys think? Should I try putting things in my path? I heard you can do that so that you bump into them, and it wakes you up. I just don't know what I'd do if I sleepdrove again and something bad happened.

Do you  know anyone that sleepwalks?  What do they do to stop it? Or do they not even do anything?

Awakely yours,

Behka
