Some In Missouri Upset With Chiefs Super Bowl Celebration

No matter how good a sports team does, or what they do well, someone will be there to complain. Even if that team wins the Super Bowl. In the case of the Kansas City Chiefs, some party poopers don't like the drinking some team members did at the team's celebration last Wednesday.

It started as some letters to the editor of the Kansas City Star and has progressed to a story on the Fox News website. Ok, maybe Patrick Mahomes allegedly giving the Vince Lombardi Trophy to a fan and walking away is a sign, yeah, that maybe he and the boys should have paced the adult beverages a little more. Don't worry, it was a replica of the real trophy.

Fox News reports one letter said Coach Andy Reid shouldn't have let it happen. A couple cited the fact that these players are role models and giving kids the wrong message by publically partying.

I always get a little irritated when those in the no-fun brigade pull out the protect the children line and start talking about role models.

Where is it written that pro athletes, actresses, actors, politicians, or anyone in public life have to be role models? Why is that the expectation? Why is it Patrick Mahome's responsibility to keep your kid from thinking it's cool to get lit on Friday night with a six-pack?

News flash, it's not. As a parent or guardian that's your job.

Does it make it harder when athletes are seen boozing it up while celebrating? Or a pop star is shown flaunting his or her marijuana use? Sure. However, as a parent. As an adult with life experiences, it's your job to instill the values you believe in your offspring.

If you think the Chiefs partying looks bad, that's a great teaching moment to talk to your kids about alcohol use. If the pop star your kid is into enjoys smoking pot and publically glamorizes it, that's the time to talk to your kids about drugs.

I'm not a parent, but I was a kid once. So I'll say this. Even if it seems like they're blowing off what you're trying to show them, they're not. Because you're twice the role model to your kid than Patrick Mahomes will ever be.
