Certain lots of Sportmix Pet Food have been recalled because of fatal levels of toxins caused by mold that can cause illness or death in pets.

Back in December Midwestern Pet Foods, Inc. recalled certain lots of their Sportmix pet food products after Tim Evans, an associate professor in the MU College of Veterinary Medicine, and Mizzou's veterinary toxicology expert alerted the Missouri Department of Agriculture that a sample of pet food submitted to him by a former student contained high levels of aflatoxin that exceeded FDA levels. This according to a release from The University of Missouri.

The problem with the food is aflatoxins, toxins produced by the mold Aspergillus Flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxins can cause illness and death in pets. This according to recall information from the Food and Drug Andministration.

On December 30, 2020 the pet food company recalled certain lots of Sportmix pet food products and multiple product samples were tested by the Missouri Department of Agriculture. According to the FDA these samples were "found to contain very high levels of aflatoxins."

On January 11, 2021 Midwestern Pet Food, Inc. expanded their recall to include all pet foods containg corn and manufactured at the company's Oklahoma plant and having an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022. The FDA says as of January 21, 110 dogs have died and 210 are sick after eating certain pet food manufactured by the company.

As a fourth-generation family-owned company, Midwestern Pet Foods has been committed to ensuring that our products are safe and nutritious for nearly 100 years. Until recently, throughout our long history, we’ve never had a product recall. Though still limited in scope, in cooperation with the FDA and out of an abundance of caution, we have expanded the voluntary recall to include additional corn-containing lot codes of Sportmix, Pro Pac Originals, Splash, Sportstrail, and Nunn Better dry dog and cat foods produced in our Oklahoma Kitchen with an expiration date on or before July 9, 2022.

You can read more of Midwestern Pet Food's statement and get more details on what exactly is being recalled on their webpage here. According to the Sportmix website their pet foods are available in Sedalia at Tractor Supply Company and Hostetlers Farm & Feed, Kuntry Bulk Grocery in WIndosr, Old Drum Pet Motel and Kimi's Dog World in Knob Noster and Pet Lovers Lane in Warrensburg.
