“From the bangers that made the world dance, to ballads that captured a moment -- let’s look back, celebrate, and then play it forward.”

Thus starts the 2014 edition of Spotify’s ‘Year In Music,' a recap examining the most listened to music of the last 12 months. We want to spare you the bangers and ballads, so we’ve gone through to pull out some of the highlights from the streaming service’s report. (If you’re a bangers type of guy, though, check out the full feature here.)

Spotify’s Top Male Artist of 2014 was none other than Ed Sheeran, followed by Eminem, Calvin Harris, Avicii and David Guetta. The most-listened to female artists? Katy Perry takes the top spot, with Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé and Lorde rounding out the Top 5.

The top band on Spotify this year were British rockers Coldplay, along with Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, OneRepublic and One Direction.

The list we were excited to read was for the Breakout Artist, and we’re thrilled to find Alt-J as the top breakout artist of the year (though, they actually broke out in 2013, right?). The rest of the list includes Royal Blood, Tove Lo, Future Islands and Jungle.

Can you guess what Spotify’s Top Album of the Year is? Ed Sheeran’s ‘X’ nabbed the crown, with Sam Smith’s ‘In the Lonely Hour’ coming in at a close second.

And as far as the Top 10 Songs go, we kind of think the list is a bit underwhelming:

10. ‘Talk Dirty’ -- Jason Derulo (feat. 2 Chainz)
9. ‘Summer’ -- Calvin Harris
8. ‘Latch’ -- Disclosure (feat. Sam Smith)
7. ‘Pompeii’ -- Bastille
6. ‘Rude’ -- Magic!
5. ‘All of Me’ -- John Legend
4. ‘Problem’ -- Ariana Grande
3. ‘Happy’ -- Pharell Williams
2. ‘Dark Horse’ -- Katy Perry
1. ‘Fancy’ -- Iggy Azalea

If you were wondering what the most viral song of the year was, Spotify has you covered with the no surprise smash hit of Hozier’s ‘Take Me to Church.’

So what do you think of Spotify's review of 2014? Are you a Spotify user? Do you feel represented? We have to admit -- we kind of feel out-of-the-loop with the cool kids ... but you know what? We're OK with that.
