A Missouri State Fire Marshall was called to the scene of a two-story structure fire Tuesday morning after the Sedalia Fire Department responded to 521 West 5th Street.

Three residents were displaced from the apartment residence. American Red Cross is working with them.

Fire crews responded to the corner of 5th and Missouri after 5 a.m., and discovered smoke showing on the second floor.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Matt Irwin, crews experienced significant fire conditions in the second floor apartment. Fire damage was confined to the second floor with smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the residence.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but is under investigation by the SFD and the Missouri State Fire Marshal, who arrived this morning from the Warrensburg office.

There were no injuries reported to the occupants or firefighters. The occupant in the second story apartment was at work when the fire broke out, and two occupants on the first floor escaped injury, Deputy Chief Irwin said.

However, one dog did perish in the fire.
