We’re all going to let the expeletives fly on Election Night 2016, regardless of the outcome, and no one is more excited than Stephen Colbert. After years of keeping it cable and broadcast-appropriate, the Late Show host is exercising all the profanity he can muster in new TV spots for the live Showtime election special.
If there’s a silver lining to the 2016 election, it might be that late-night hosts are at the top of their game. If there’s two, our tolerance for booze has gone way, way up. Thankfully Stephen Colbert will help us combine both, live on November 8, as Showtime released the first uncensored tease for Colbert’s live election night special.
It was back in August that Showtime first suggested Stephen Colbert might dive into the ring for an Election Night special, and after a grueling few months, we’re finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. Officially confirmed for November 8 is a live Colbert Showtime production, asking a very appropriate question as its title.
The fervor for Netflix’s Stranger Things has more or less passed (now that we have a second season to look forward to, anyway), but with the young stars still making press rounds, Stephen Colbert finally got his chance for a late-night parody. Look’s like Eleven’s back to crushing Coke cans in a new Colbert cold open, but with a musical twist.
Colbert viewers couldn’t help but notice a bit more Late Show spark when the former Colbert Report host went live to take on the Republican and Democratic national conventions, and CBS certainly won’t ignore it either. The eye has in mind for three more live shows to follow the fall Presidential debates, you know, assuming no one in particular decides to sit them out.
Stephen Colbert may be the wildly successful host of a popular late night talk show on a major television network, but that doesn’t change who he really is: a huge nerd. Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson said of Colbert, “I have never met a bigger Tolkien geek in my life.” The Late Show host appeared in The Desolation of Smaug and hosted a Hobbit panel at Comic-Con. But his geek cred is not limited to Middle Earth. Last night, Colbert delivered an impassioned prediction of how Star Wars: The Force Awakens will end, and the funniest thing is, he wasn’t joking.
The reviews for Stephen Colbert’s debut as the new Late Show host were mostly positive. Our own Matt Singer said the show got off to a “solid start” as Colbert took over for David Letterman, but the show almost didn’t get off to a start at all. On his second show, Colbert revealed that because of editing and technical glitches, his first episode almost didn’t make it on air.
