A series of tornadoes ripped across Arkansas, Oklahoma and Iowa on Sunday, killing at least 17 people and destroying multiple homes, vehicles and businesses.
Pettis County EMA Director Dave Clippert recently released a report reviewing Missouri's severe weather trends in 2013. In recent years, the amount of tornadoes have gone down for most of the country, but not in Missouri. According to Clippert, Missouri experienced 54 tornadoes in 2013, compared to 32 tornadoes in 2012.
On Sunday more than 80 tornadoes tore through the Midwest, killing at least six people in Illinois, injuring dozens more, leveling homes and businesses, and leaving a swath of destruction from Missouri through Michigan.
UPDATE Saturday 6:15 a.m. EST: The number of reported fatalities is at least five, with another 71 injuries caused by what authorities say are a total of 17 tornadoes ripping through the Midwest on Friday.
On Sunday, at least 25 tornadoes pummeled states across the Midwest and Great Plains. At least two people died in the storms. Even more harsh weather, and not just tornadoes, is set to hit much of the rest of the country on Monday.
