Ever since Christmas night many have been excited at the prospect of saying goodbye to 2020 and hello to 2021. Who am I kidding, lots of people have been excited at the prospect of kicking 2020 to the curb since the middle of last summer. Most of the time I roll my eyes at the comments or the sentiments.

I mean, is COVID-19 magically going to disappear on January 1? Will concerts automatically start back up? Will we be able to ditch our masks? Go back to how life was 365 days ago?

Obviously not. In fact not much will change on New Year's Day. Except I'll be one day closer to going back to work. And the new stylus I ordered for my turn-table will be one day closer to being delivered. And we'll all be one day closer to getting that $600 dollars from the government. We'll also be one day closer to tax day.

In the past couple of days though I think I figured it out. And boy do I feel kind of stupid.

All this talk about the new year isn't about some magical thing that will happen at midnight. Some immediate change that becomes effective at midnight January 1.

It's really about the same thing we hope for every year. The promise the new year represents. The hope that fortune, fate, God, karma, hard work, perseverance, luck, whatever you call it smiles on us, our family, friends, our life.

So for 2021 here's what I'm hoping for:

  • That we can beat down COVID-19 and get somewhat back to normal.
  • That the Missouri State Fair comes off without a hitch, concerts and all. The State Fair staff works so hard to pull of a great fair every year. They deserve to have one that's perfect this August.
  • That I have an opportunity to spend time with family and friends back home. At this point it's been over a year since I've visited and I miss these people.
  • That my friends and I here at the radio stations take our stations to new heights. And have fun doing that.
  • That Kathy and I will get to Kansas City this summer for a long weekend, And also that we take a long weekend so I can finally experience the Pink Poodle Steak House in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
  • That my Mom finds her dream condo, moves in, and gets to make many memories with her friends and family there.

I also hope for the best for all of us. So on New Year's Eve, when I lift my glass of sparkling grape juice, I'm wishing for the best for all of us. I hope that the promise of 2021 lives up to all our expectations. Cheers!
