According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, on Saturday evening, September 22, at 8:54 p.m., the September or fall equinox arrives. Autumn becomes a reality. For many, this time of year is their favorite.

In the Midwestern part of the United States, all the seasons are very apparent. The spring season is very green, the summer is very hot, the winter very cold and the fall is full of magnificent colors. It also opens up great opportunities for one day and weekend ventures to some fantastic festivals in the state.

The Black Walnut Festival is taking place in Stockton, MO. The four day festival kicks off Thursday, September 27 and goes through Saturday, September 29 . It features a carnival, black walnut cooking contests, craft and food vendors, live music, a parade and a beauty contest.

National Harvest Festival is going on in Branson through October 27. An annual event featuring over 125 visiting craftsmen, a barn dance, and Buck Taylor’s Cowboy Emporium.  Don’t miss the Wild West Show inspired by Buffalo Bill’s show.  See Kent Rollins demonstrate chuck wagon cooking along with cowboy stories, poetry and humor.  Also enjoy Chris Isaacs tales of cowboy life.  If you are into horses then see trainer Fred Woehl beautiful wild mustangs.  This is a must see event.

You can head west out of Sedalia and head to Gladstone, MO for Gladfest.  Gladfest is a wonderful fall festival with something for everyone! Don't miss the Parade on Saturday morning, as well as daily entertainment on Linden Square Stage! A Carnival will be open all three days for kids of all ages. The event runs October 5-7.

Heading back east you’ll find Oktoberfest in Old Munichburg. Come have some fun at Jefferson City's 17th Annual Oktoberfest celebrating the south side German heritage. Activities will include German dinners, German music and dancing, Muenchberg Beer/Wine Garden, Kids Korner, Dachshund Derby, craft show and car show. It runs Friday and September 28 from 5-8pm, Saturday from 10am-6pm. It’s located at West Dunklin, Broadway and Washington Streets in Jefferson City.

In Columbia, its food and music with the 12th Annual Roots N Blues N BBQ Festival will be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, September 28th – 30th, at Stephens Lake Park.
