Whittier High School Service Learning students are currently planning a Special Olympics Play Unified Day to take place in April.

Sedalia 200 says it is an opportunity for students in the district with intellectual and developmental disabilities to participate in an afternoon of learning, practicing and playing kickball with fellow district students.

The event is dubbed Tiger Pride Play Unified and is open to students age 8 years old through 5th grade. It was noted that all district elementary schools will be represented.

Assistant Director at Whittier High School, B. J. Curry, said that "students came up with the name and idea," to include their school spirit along with the goal of bringing kids together in a safe, fun environment.

At the Sedalia 200 School Board meeting Monday night, it was emphasized that the ultimate goal for unified events is to bring kids of all abilities together to enjoy activities, create friendships and break down the barriers of misunderstanding.

Whittier students brainstormed the idea last spring and have been working the regional director of Special Olympics Missouri, Diane Brimer, ever since to create the event, which is scheduled for April 25.

Whittier Director, Martin White, added that Tiger Pride Play Unified Day will be held at the middle school.
