Western Missouri Medical Center (WMMC) will hosting an inaugural Colorectal Cancer Awareness Event on March 30, in honor of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month in March.

The event will be held next to the Courtyard Café in the Main Hospital Building from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the “third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women” in the U.S. (American Cancer Society – Key Statistics for Colorectal Cancer) Colon cancer is the only cancer that can be avoided with a preventative screening—a colonoscopy. Colonoscopies are for individuals 45 and older and are covered by most insurance providers.

At the event, attendees can hear from WMMC physicians, including General Surgeon Dr. Amira Ghazali, about why colonoscopies are effective, learn more about the signs and symptoms of colon cancer, and sign up for a colonoscopy. Those who sign up for a colonoscopy in March and complete their screening within 60 days of scheduling it could win a cash prize of $500 or $250.
