Sedalia Police Reports For July 21, 2023

Early Friday morning, Officers were working traffic in a work zone in the 2000 block of South Limit Avenue because a water main broke in the area. Officers heard a loud crash and observed a vehicle had driven through safety cones and into a flashing yellow directional merge sign. The vehicle then attempted to leave the scene, but was stopped by Law Enforcement. The Missouri State Highway Patrol assisted, arresting one male suspect* for charges of Driving While Intoxicated.

Sedalia Police were dispatched to the Wood’s Supermarket, 701 East Broadway Boulevard, to investigate a report of an intoxicated subject trespassing Thursday evening. Upon arrival, Officers learned one of the suspects, who was intoxicated by narcotics, had been trespassed. Virgil Andrew Edgar, 50, of Sedalia, was arrested for Assault in the 4th Degree and Trespassing in the 1st Degree.

Wednesday night, Officers conducted a traffic stop near the area of East Broadway Boulevard and South Massachusetts Avenue on a truck because it was travelling with no headlights on. During the course of the investigation, it was revealed there was a two-year-old child in the vehicle with no car seat, and the driver had a suspended driving status. Christina Marie Bakert, 34, of Sedalia, was arrested for Driving While Suspended and No Child Passenger Restraint System. Bakert was transported to the Pettis County jail to be booked and released.

Officers conducted a traffics top on a vehicle last Saturday evening because it was observed speeding near East Broadway Boulevard and South Babcock Avenue. During the investigation, it was determined the driver was intoxicated. Mauricio Torres Rascon, 30, of Kansas City, was arrested and transported to the Sedalia Police Department. There, Rascon provided a breath sample that showed his BAC to be above 0.08. Rascon was then transported to the Pettis County Jail to be booked on charges of Driving While Intoxicated and Operating a Motor Vehicle on the Highway Without a Valid License.

Thursday morning, Officers conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of West Main Street and South State Fair Boulevard. Officers contacted the driver, and checked his information with Dispatch. It was then confirmed the driver had an active warrant from Johnson County Kansas on charges of felony Forgery. Joshua C. Richey, 26, of Kansas City, was arrested on his warrant and on a charge of Fugitive From Justice. Richey was given a cash or surety bond of $3500 on the warrant.

Thursday evening, Officers were dispatched to the 100 block of East Main Street for a report of an obviously deceased person. Officers went into the residence and located the victim, who had been deceased for some time. The Pettis County Coroner, Skip Smith, was contacted. Smith responded to the scene. McLaughlin Funeral Home was contacted on behalf of the family. The victim’s body was transported to the funeral home.

Sedalia Police met with a victim at her residence Thursday afternoon in the 600 block of East 13th Street in reference to an assault. The victim wished to pursue charges on an assault that occurred in the 300 block of West Broadway Boulevard Sunday by someone known to her. The case remains under investigation.

Officers were called to the 400 block of East 7th Street Thursday night in reference to a son and mother having a domestic disturbance. It was found the son had forced open a storm door and began yelling at his mother. When she tried to get him away from her face, he slapped her arm down. The mother did not want to cooperate with the investigation. She only wanted to issue a trespass notice to the son. There was a domestic that someone said there was an assault and a report was made for documentation.

Wednesday afternoon, Officers responded to the 1200 block of South Lamine Avenue to investigate a report of property damage. Officers interviewed Alma Nava Sebastion, the victim, and determined  a domestic assault occurred. Officers are requesting charges against the suspect for Domestic Assault in the 3rd Degree.

Thursday morning, Officers were dispatched to the Elite Dry Cleaners, 3232 West 16th Street in reference to a property damage report. Suspects had come into the laundromat and tampered with eight washing machines in the business. The suspects damaged the machines to the point of needing circuit boards replaced. The estimated cost to replaced the damaged property was $7200.

Sedalia Police were dispatched to the 1400 block of South Grand Avenue Wednesday afternoon in reference to a warrant check. A computer check of the individual’s information showed they had an active warrant for their arrest from 2021. Heather S. Bentrup, 29, of Sedalia, was arrested on her Failure to Appear warrant that carried original charges of Violation of a Court Order. Bentrup was transported to the Pettis County jail and given a cash only bond of $362.50.

Sunday evening, Officers spoke to April D. Peterson about a theft from her vehicle. Peterson stated that items had been taken from her vehicle while he was inside the Dollar General store, 2500 West Broadway Boulevard. There was no information on what was taken or the value of the items in the report.
